FAS-302 ESL Intermediate English for Conversation
This course develops the skills necessary for clear, natural speech through the use of new vocabulary and pronunciation techniques. Teacher-monitored paired and small group speaking activities will help students gain confidence communicating in social situations.

FAS-303: ESL Advanced Pronunciation Improvement This course is designed especially for experienced English speakers interested in developing more American-like speech. Through individual student audio recordings, the instructor will identify those vowel and consonant sounds which interfere with overall comprehensibility. Appropriate practice exercises and group practice will concentrate on such elements as stress, intonation, and blending. The first hour of the class takes place in the language lab.

This course is designed to help students fine-tune their English language skills in order to enhance their overall fluency. Students will participate in a variety of classroom activities ranging from informal conversations to more formal discussions allowing a wide range of language usage. Coursework will include strategies for making formal presentations and each student will have the opportunity to present a topic of interest while focusing on pronunciation and delivery.

This intermediate/advanced course integrates reading, writing, and grammar to help students improve their overall effectiveness in writing. Students will learn to express themselves clearly by focusing on the development of complex sentences and other structured writing tasks. Through revision, students will learn to express their ideas more fluently and increase their self-confidence in writing.

FAS-330: Advanced Grammar and Vocabulary for TOEFL
This advanced course will provide tactics for understanding the complex grammatical structures which frequently appear on TOEFL. By strengthening vocabulary, essential to all three parts of the test, students will build a foundation for the whole test. Students will learn test-taking strategies to enhance their speed and proficiency.

FAS-420: Speaking English Professionally
Designed for advanced nonnative speakers of English, this course helps participants improve their usage of English in professional contexts. Topics include strategies for self-improvement, how to compensate for errors, audience monitoring, cultural appropriateness, and pronunciation practice. Participants practice speaking tasks such as giving presentations or leading discussions, followed by peer review, instructor feedback, and self critique. The goal is to achieve maximum effectiveness in those patterns most appropriate for spoken English. FAS-465: Presentation Skills for Nonnative Speakers of English
The essentials of effective formal presentations, whether in a committee, classroom, conference, or other setting, can be practiced and mastered. This workshop-style course focuses on effective oral delivery skills such as organization, content, pace, volume, and voice quality as well as nonverbal delivery techniques such as use of eye contact and gestures. Participants prepare and deliver several short formal presentations, which are videotaped for review and feedback. Short Tutorial Format; 1 hour weekly for 7 weeks.
This shorter version of FAS-471 is designed for nonnative speakers of English with very mild accents who, after an initial speech assessment for FAS-470 or 471, are deemed able to address their pronunciation needs more quickly than the 13-week courses allow.
